MCV
« on: February 02, 2012, 09:48:34 AM »
Good morning Hygieia!

I am in week 7 with inc.  My weekly labs are all good with the exception now of wbc at 1.7 and ANC at 0.7; we are in the process of neupogen authorization with insurance company. Also had a peg reduction to 135 in the meantime.

My HBG remains steady at 12.3, but my MCV has been hovering around the 100 mark. I know that is barely over normal, and my Hepatologist is aware and doesn't seem especially concerned about it.  My PCP, however, seems more concerned, saying it is leading to megaloblastic anemia and has recommended that I add Preconverted Folic Acid to my regimen.  I checked with Hepatologist and they agreed that it's good to add.  I only take Lunesta and the occasional Zofran for severe nausea when needed, as well as fish oil and electrolytes.

Any thoughts on the MCV? I know it's one of the many different types of anemia, but with my HGB still within normal range, is it something to be terribly concerned about - or just something to be aware of and corrected with the folic acid?

Thank you again, for taking time to answer our questions.

Bye for now,
B

folic acid is a good idea. if you are on procrit (which i don't think you are) you spit out more new cells which are larger because they are immature. this is not typical for treatment, but it is not worrying me

Thank you, Hygieia!

No, I am not on procrit but still waiting on approval for neupogen.

Just returned from seeing the eye doc as I was having severe pain in my left eye; diagnosed as a corneal ulcer due to bacteria my body can't fight (low wbc and anc).  Using fluorometholone and ciproflaxcin eye drops which were cleared by my hep nurse (am on triple w/incivek).

Isn't this fun????

I so appreciate your help,
