Don't know enough about how the health care system works in Canada but in the US, it is an unconscionable shame.

Totally different here in Canada. We have socialized healthcare  and despite a few faults here and there, it's by and large a great system. The government pays for everything, not insurance companies. All my labs are free, tests, biopsy, etc, etc. The only times insurance companies are involved is through workplace insurance if you have it, like for drug costs. No exclusion of pre-existing conditions, either.

That's how it should be. Maybe better not open that political/ideological can of worms here. But what the heck! In the U.S. we have other priorities, like 'nation-building' (creating customers or exploiting resources). Screw the non-wealthy, the un- or under-insured. Thank goodness they have very little power so they're no threat to the corporate State Grrrrrr

Cheryl, So happy to hear that you are getting the care you need. There really are good doctors out there. I'm also happy to add my name to the list (too short list) of folks whose drs are more concerned with their patients' welfare than their kitchen remodel. I don't have health coverage, either, but I do have 3 providers who have never, ever asked me to pay them, and they graciously take whatever I can pay them, whenever I can. They ask me where I want to get necessary tests because some places are cheaper than others and have bent over backwards getting me signed up for free treatment and rescue meds, heck-- I even had a free mammo and ultrasound last week!

I hope these stories encourage others to look into this. The US health care system might not work very well but there are at least a few resources for those truly in need. I never in a million yyears would have imagined that I would be on tx and receiving regular care when I don't have insurance but I am!

congrats, Cheryl!

You know, that's a good point, shalice. The one thing you have in abundance in the U.S. is medical superstars! You have some great hospitals, medical centers, research and teaching universities, as well as some great docs like the ones mentioned here that put care before profit. Sometimes the medical superstar is just that kind of doctor. I don't want to come across as bashing health care in the States; I don't live there and it's not good for the unity we have on this forum.

Well, guys, I'm sure that both countries have their problems.  The point is that there are still good doctors in the world that really do care about their patients.  If anybody on this site is not satisfied with the care you are getting, don't hesitate to shop around for a caring doctor where you can be comfortable and well cared for.  They are still out there.  Sometimes you get lucky like I did, and find one the first try and sometimes you have to hunt for them, but don't give up and do whatever you need to to find the right doctor and situation for you.

It's a comfort to know that there are still some people, even a few doctors!, out there that care.  Thanks for sharing.  Best wishes to you.
